We are gratified at the performance of the Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) during 2013.
In my seven years as chairperson of the FSE I have had the privilege to see the FSE’s growth and its establishment as one of the leading NGOs within the mining industry, notwithstanding its limited funding. It is critical that the FSE continues in 2014 to lobby and advocate not only for the mining industry and our Government’s responsible dealing with the legacy of historical poor, environmental practices but for intra-generational equity, that is, that the interests of both current and future generations are not compromised by unsustainable mining authorisations and irresponsible mining practices.

Millions of South Africans are exposed to radioactive radon gas in their homes and workplaces every day, as the naturally occurring gas escapes through cracks in the earth. The second leading cause of lung cancer in several countries, radon breaks down and when inhaled, decaying atoms emit alpha radiation that can damage the DNA. There are no safe levels of radon concentration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency emphasises any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer. Carte Blanche investigates why South Africa has no regulations to protect against radon accumulation in the home and what you can do to test your home and prevent lung cancer. Watch the video here.
