Mynbou nalentskap is "rampspoedig"

Written by Sunday, 23 November 2008 00:26

Written by Sunday, 21 September 2008 13:35

In 1998, the White Paper on Energy outlined a comprehensive energy policy for South Africa. Since then, several laws have been passed and implemented; however, many gaps remain. The Draft National Energy Bill seeks to fill those gaps, as well as to respond to some of the regulatory issues responsible for precipitating recent energy crisis.

Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg (ELA Jhb) raise concern that the bill does not adequately focus on the needs of South Africa’s poor.

Wild Coast mining can be stopped

Written by Monday, 14 April 2008 02:00

SOUTH Africa's environmental authorities have strongly rejected heavy minerals mining plans that could cause irreversible and extensive damage to pristine parts of the Wild Coast - but the Department of Minerals and Energy is still considering granting a mining licence.

And in a development described by leading environmental lawyers as "bizarre", "plain nonsense" and "patently ridiculous", the Department of Environmental Affairs has admitted to a bungle by submitting its official objections "too late" to be taken into account by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME).

Ermelo.

Radon Alert - Carte Blanche

Millions of South Africans are exposed to radioactive radon gas in their homes and workplaces every day, as the naturally occurring gas escapes through cracks in the earth. The second leading cause of lung cancer in several countries, radon breaks down and when inhaled, decaying atoms emit alpha radiation that can damage the DNA. There are no safe levels of radon concentration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency emphasises any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer. Carte Blanche investigates why South Africa has no regulations to protect against radon accumulation in the home and what you can do to test your home and prevent lung cancer.   Watch the video here.
