Professional registration for Environmental Assessment Practitioners required within 2 years of the appointment of a Registration Authority

Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has signed into law regulations pertaining to the appointment of a registration authority that will be responsible for the registration of environmental assessment practitioners. 

In response to the country's need to take an improved integrated approach to Water Quality Management, the Department of Water and Sanitation has recently initiated a project to revise its current Water Quality Management (WQM) Policies and Strategies.

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Government’s acknowledgment of the severity of acid mine drainage (AMD) in the Witwatersrand, Gauteng, and the subsequent priority given to taking steps to alleviate the problem are of “significant importance”, states Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) CEO Mariette Liefferink.

South African minister of water and sanitation announced earlier in the month that her department was ready to implement a long term strategy to deal with acid mine drainage. The acid has been a source of pollution known to gold miners and activists for over 100 years. Angelo Coppola of CCTV has more.

The Federation for a Sustainable Environment and its directors extend deepest sympathy to the dear family of Bazooka Radebe.   This is indeed a great and irreparable loss not only to his family but also to fellow activists.  
He will be deeply mourned by all of us and his courageous protagonism and integrity will be ever remembered.

The Wild Coast anti-mining activist Mr Sikhosiphi “Bazooka” Rhadebe was assisinated at his home in Xolobeni on South Africa’s Wild Coast on Tuesday 22 March 2016.

Blyoor issues again to the fore

Residents of Blyvoor were this week still not sure what their future would bring.

According to Blyvoor's provisional liquidator, Mr Leigh Roering, the mine's liquidation is set to be finalised towards the end of May, despite the fact that some administration would still have to be done after this time. At this stage only the mine's No. 5 rock stock pile and the assets of Shaft no. 2 still need to be sold.

FSE - DONATION OF TREES AND TREE PLANTING IN SIMUNYE, WEST RAND IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOUTH DEEP MINE

The FSE, in association with Gold Fields’ South Deep Mine, donated 40 white Karee Trees (Searsia penduline) during Arbor Week to the mining affected community of Simunye in the West Rand and participated in the tree planting ceremony with the community of Simunye, the local Municipality and officials from South Deep Mine.  The FSE also delivered a presentation during the ceremony.

Radon Alert - Carte Blanche

Millions of South Africans are exposed to radioactive radon gas in their homes and workplaces every day, as the naturally occurring gas escapes through cracks in the earth. The second leading cause of lung cancer in several countries, radon breaks down and when inhaled, decaying atoms emit alpha radiation that can damage the DNA. There are no safe levels of radon concentration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency emphasises any radon exposure has some risk of causing lung cancer.
