The Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) hereby objects to the granting of a water use license to the Yzerfontein mine.
The area in question falls within the Gert Sibande District Municipality. The Spatial Development Plan (SDP) for this municipality states that the “sensitive upper catchments and wetlands in the Wakkerstroom area” “… must be actively protected, managed and enhanced so as to ensure that they are not degraded by mining, forestry, agricultural and human settlement activities.” According to the SDP, compatible economic activities, including forestry and tourism related activities, must be allowed to continue in these areas.
