The UN Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights, Dr. Marcos Orellana visited South Africa from 31 July to 11 August 2023.
The Federation for a Sustainable Environment (FSE) was requested by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in support of the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur, to conduct, on the Gauteng leg of the UN delegation’s visit, site visits of the West Rand goldfields. The mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur’s interest is in examining “the human rights impacts and the situation on the ground with respect to mining activities in the region, such as artisanal gold mining”. The mandate considered the Krugersdorp area an important location/site to visit.
